There are different types of plastics, many of which contain plasticizers or other additives, so their use in protecting photographs is restricted.
Of the various bibliographies that can be consulted, their authors highlight the following as plastics suitable for the protection of photographic documents: polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, PET), better known by the trade name Mylar D (Dupont) and Melinex (I.C.I America Imc .), polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (PEHD). Poly PVC (vinyl chloride) is strongly discouraged. Of the plastics mentioned, the most used today is polyester.
